Things to Do in Athens: Ancient Landmarks and Everyday City Life
From the Acropolis to neighbourhood cafés, discover a city that rewards both sightseeing and wandering.
25 September 2026
Athens has a way of making history feel close. You can spend the morning among ancient temples, stop for lunch on a lively square, and end the day watching the city lights come on from a hillside. If it’s your first visit, these experiences are a good place to start.
Visit the Acropolis
The Acropolis is Athens’ defining landmark, and seeing the Parthenon up close is worth the climb. Give yourself time to explore the site rather than treating it as a quick photo stop. Afterwards, visit the Acropolis Museum to see objects connected to the monuments and learn more about their history. (odysseus.culture.gr, thisisathens.org)
Wander through Plaka and Anafiotika
Below the Acropolis, Plaka’s winding streets are lined with old houses, churches, cafés, and small shops. Follow the lanes uphill towards Anafiotika, then turn down whichever street catches your eye. This part of Athens is best enjoyed without a strict route. (thisisathens.org)
Explore Monastiraki and Psirri
Monastiraki is a lively place to browse market stalls and take in the bustle of the city centre. Nearby Psirri offers a different pace, with small streets, cafés, and places to settle in for dinner. Walk between the two to see how quickly the mood of Athens can change from one square to the next. (thisisathens.org, thisisathens.org)
Take a break in the National Garden
When you want a quieter moment, head to the National Garden near Syntagma Square. Its shaded paths offer a welcome pause in the middle of a busy sightseeing day. You can continue your walk towards Zappeion and the surrounding streets afterwards. (thisisathens.org, thisisathens.org)
See the city from above
Athens looks different when you can take in its rooftops, hills, and ancient landmarks at once. Walk up Lycabettus Hill for a broad view across the city, or explore the paths around Philopappou Hill near the Acropolis. Late afternoon is an especially lovely time to slow down and enjoy the view. Leave room for an unplanned stop
Some of the best moments in Athens happen between the famous sights: a coffee in Koukaki, a bakery you happened to pass, or a long meal that turns into an evening out. See the landmarks, but leave space in your day to follow the city’s rhythm. (thisisathens.org, accessible.thisisathens.org)
